These animal pencil portraits were part of my bimonthly collaboration for Claudia Mäder’s column Das Tier, a series of articles on the history of animals published in the Swiss magazine NZZ Geschichte (Neue Zürcher Zeitung).
Each illustration accompanies a literary or philosophical reflection on the historical role, cultural perception, or symbolic meaning of a specific animal — from the domesticated to the mythological.
The visual approach is based on detailed pencil drawing, centered and isolated, with a soft and almost surreal atmosphere. Composition choices are minimal, letting each creature speak for itself.
